This mural is about Pdx in the 60's-80's. The Alberta/Albina district along with a lot of post-Jim Crow America, was a victim of redlining.... Redlining, a process by which banks and other institutions refuse to offer mortgages or offer worse rates to customers in certain neighborhoods based on their racial and ethnic composition, is one of the clearest examples of of institutionalized racism in the history of the United States. Although the practice was formally outlawed in 1968 with the passage of the Fair Housing Act, it continues in various forms to this day. ...So my mural is about how there was still a thriving black community especially through the arts and musical night clubs. The Dude Ranch, Solae's (has several other names too), and The Cotton Club were black owned businesses that catered to that need of black creativity and expression and hosted big name acts along with local talent.
